Hard Reset Tracker

From time to time you might need to do a reset of your Tracker. Before attempting a Hard Reset or a Registry Reset as outlined below, please try a Soft Reset to see if it fixes your problem. This is a much more gentle procedure; there is no risk of losing any of your software, data, or settings.

Soft Reset Tracker or Tracker Xtreme

  1. Start with the MicroSurvey Tracker turned on.
  2. Exit from any running programs.
  3. Bring up your Windows Start menu by any of the following methods:
  • Tap your stylus in the very bottom-left corner of the touchscreen
  • Tracker Xtreme: press the Windows key at the top-left corner of the keypad
  • Tracker: press the 2nd then W keys on your keypad (this key is labelled WMENU for Windows Menu)
  1. Tap on Programs | Tools | Warm Boot
  2. Your Tracker will re-boot, and automatically come back to the usual Windows screen after several seconds.
  3. Note, nothing has been erased by this procedure, it is much like restarting a desktop computer.

From time to time you might need to do a hard reset of your Tracker. A hard reset will return your Tracker's main memory to factory settings, erasing everything in the system ram. FieldGenius and Evidence Recorder are saved in the SystemCF directory which will not be affected when you do a hard reset.

Before you do the hard reset, we always recommend backing up any important files you might have on the Tracker.

Hard Reset Tracker or Tracker Xtreme

  1. Start with the MicroSurvey Tracker turned on.
  2. Exit from any running programs.
  3. Turn off the Tracker by holding the power button down for 10 seconds.
  4. Release the power button after you see the screen slowly fade out.
  5. Press and release the power button to start the reboot process.
  6. You will see a white bootup screen while it boots, and then you will see the usual Windows desktop screen.
  7. Note, all contents of Main Memory have now been deleted by this process, so items or shortcuts you had on the Desktop or in the Start Menu may no longer be there. MicroSurvey products, including FieldGenius 2004 and newer, Evidence Recorder 3.0 and newer, and OfficeSync Field Connect are all self-repairing, so you can use My Computer to navigate to their folder in the SystemCF folder and run them from there, new desktop and start menu icons will be automatically created for you. If you are using FieldGenius XG or older, or Evidence Recorder 2.0 or older, you will need to re-install the software.

From time to time you might need to reset the registry of your Tracker. A registry reset will return your Tracker's Main Memory and System Registry to factory settings, and will erase everything in the system ram. FieldGenius or Evidence Recorder are saved in the SystemCF directory which will not be affected when you do a hard reset.

Before you do the hard reset, we always recommend backing up any important files you might have on the Tracker.

Reset Registry of Tracker or Tracker Xtreme

  6. As soon as you release the power button in step 5, you then have to hold down the following two keys (depending on which type of keyboard your Tracker has), and continue holding them until the white reboot screen appears.
  • Tracker Xtreme : "Windows" and "Caps" keys
  • Tracker with 4 keys in each row : "A" and "I" keys
  • Tracker with 3 keys in each row : "A" and "G" keys
  1. When the white screen appears, you can release the two keys.
  2. If you are successful, the screen will display version information, followed by ‚¬Å“Invalidating Persistent Registry.‚¬ If you do not see this "Invalidating Persistent Registry" message, just try it again - the timing can be tricky to get right.
  3. Note, all contents of Main Memory and the System Registry have now been deleted by this process, so items or shortcuts you had on the Desktop or in the Start Menu may no longer be there. As well, registry settings such as the display and power settings of your device have also been reset to factory defaults. MicroSurvey products, including FieldGenius 2004 and newer, Evidence Recorder 3.0 and newer, and OfficeSync Field Connect are all self-repairing, so you can use My Computer to navigate to the appropriate folder in the SystemCF and run them from there, new desktop and start menu icons will be automatically created for you. If you are using FieldGenius XG or older, or Evidence Recorder 2.0 or older, you will need to re-install the software. Display, Power, and Network settings can all be re-configured through the Tracker or Tracker Xtreme's Control Panel.

After performing a Registry Reset some settings in the Tracker or Tracker Extreme will need to be changed, here are some notes that will help get it back to normal:

  • The Windows task bar will be permanently displayed and will hide some functions in your software.  Look in Start|Settings |Taskbar and Start Menu and select the option to "Autohide."
  • The desktop background will be reset to its default WindowsCE.net version.  This will not affect your performance.
  • Some functions that can decrease the battery life in a Tracker Xtreme will be re-activated.  See this article for a guide to turning off unwanted features.
  • If you have reinstalled any software after the reset be sure to perform a "Soft reset" as described earlier in this article.
