STAR*NET 12.0 Hotfix Release Notes

MicroSurvey STAR*NET 12 Hotfix

STAR*NET has been trusted to deliver high quality adjustments since 1986. It has become the industry standard in many regions and is globally recognized among land surveyors today. MicroSurvey STAR*NET provides efficient data management, editing, and analysis tools, thorough reports, and the flexibility to easily integrate data from multiple hardware sources and manufacturers. STAR*NET 12 brings a significant reduction in the processing time for computing adjustments, easier data flow from field files into STAR*NET, support for future versions of MicroSurvey FieldGenius and Leica Evidence Recorder, an updated library of coordinate systems, and usage analytics to better guide our future development.

What’s New in Version 12

What’s New (Updates from 12.0 to 12.0.3 shown in bold)

  • We made a significant investment in improving our algorithms with a focus on the speed of large adjustments. In internal testing, we are seeing a 50-95% reduction in the time required to process depending on the number of sideshots included: more sideshots means more improvement.
  • The conversion utilities are now included with all edition levels of STAR*NET as import options, and are not listed in the Windows start menu, but launched directly from the Input menu of the software. This offers a faster and more seamless experience for you when importing data.
  • The conversion utilities output directory now defaults to the containing directory of the currently open STAR*NET Project file (*.snproj), with the same filename as the selected input file. If you choose to save your files in a different location, the browse button can still be used to select a different name or location.
  • After running a conversion utility, the created *.dat file will be added to the currently open project automatically, no longer will you need to manually add it.
  • MicroSurvey FieldGenius 11.6 and Leica Evidence Recorder 11.9 have changed the format of the BP (Base Point) record from decimal degrees (DD) to degrees minutes seconds (DMS), we support this change in STAR*NET 12 and use the correct formatting.
  • We have updated the coordinate system library to include many new coordinate systems, notably the Australian MGA2020 system using the GDA2020 datum and GRS80 ellipsoid.
  • Usage analytics have been added to STAR*NET. This will help us better understand how our software is used so we can better focus our development and training efforts to ensure we serve you to the best of our ability. Your opt-in is appreciated.
  • Directional arrows in the plot window are optimized to redraw after a zoom.

Bug Fixes

  • Running adjustments through the command line interface is no longer interrupted by the licensing dialog.
  • Network plot error ellipses would sometimes be drawn in the wrong orientation, and the Z component was sometimes inverted.
  • Detect Sideshots would not identify single measurements in a 2D project.
  • We fixed two defects related to importing OPUS reports, one related to a formatting change in some newer reports and a change to OPUS-S extended reports for ITRF coordinates.
  • Resolved a crash related to the .OPUS Factor and .OPUS Centering inline commands.
  • Infrequently, a coordinate computed using sideshot detection would show the elevation as -nan. This bug has been resolved and elevations will be computed and displayed.
  • A 2D adjustment with Sideshot Detection of 3D M measure records could result in missing or incorrect coordinate values of some sideshots.
  • Resolved a bug with perpetual USB licenses and expired maintenance where the converters could not be run.

Important Notes

Activating or Updating your USB License Key

Software licenses are stored on the USB key.  These must be activated after a new purchase, and usually require manual updates when new versions of MicroSurvey STAR*NET are released.

The process is the same for both; click here for detailed instructions.

The USB License Manager program is automatically installed with MicroSurvey STAR*NET; it can be found in the STAR*NET folder in your start menu.  Open it with your USB key inserted and click the “Update Key with New Information” button.

You must have an internet connection to use the USB License Manager.  You may download the program and install it on another computer to update keys when corporate policy and firewalls prevent access from your work network.

Annual Maintenance Subscription (AMS) Program

If your AMS has expired, you may not be able to update your key to the current version of MicroSurvey STAR*NET.

For a detailed explanation of the AMS program and how we use product numbers and USB keys to license our software, please review the following article.

Each key has a different AMS plan, so multiple keys may not have the same expiry date.

You can confirm your AMS expiry date by reviewing the About screen found in the Help menu.

If your AMS has expired, you can phone us at 1-800-668-3312 or 1-250-707-0000 to renew it. Without a current maintenance subscription plan, you may not be able to update your key to work with the new version.

MicroSurvey License Portal for Floating License Users

If you have purchased a floating license, you may visit microsurvey.com/license to review usage statistics on your license.

After purchase, you will be asked to create a login for the portal.

Log in to the portal, click "Licenses & Activations", then the desired license to review its details.

MicroSurvey License Server for Network License Users

If you have purchased a network license, you must download and install a copy of the MicroSurvey Network License software on your intended license server computer.

A password is required to install the License Server.

System Requirements

MicroSurvey STAR*NET 12 is compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 11 in 64-bit only. It is not compatible with any 32-bit operating system.

A free USB port is required for the USB License Key (local workstation or network server)

Full administrator rights are required to install MicroSurvey STAR*NET 12, but it can be run by limited user accounts.

For detailed system requirements and recommendations, please review this online article.

Run as Administrator

You must run the program at least once elevated with "Run as administrator" access.

Clicking “Run” from the installation package does this automatically.

If this step is skipped, you may run as administrator by doing the following:

Right click on the MicroSurvey STAR*NET 12 icon.

Choose "Run as administrator".

Select "Yes" on the "User Account Control" dialog when prompted to allow the program to make changes to your computer.

After this step is complete, you may run the program from any user account on the computer, even if they do not have administrative privileges.
