Using Global Mapper to Display Orthoreferenced Imagery streamed from a Web map Server

Global Mapper allows you to access webmap server graphical information from a variety of paid and unpaid services.

Recommended practices:

  • Your CAD project must be georeferenced
  • Correct units must be assigned in the General Configuration Dialog
  • A correct coordinate system must be assigned in the General Configuration Dialog
  • Zoom your drawing to extents before opening GlobalMapper

(Note: if the coordinate system is unsupported the Global Mapper dialog does not open)

Open Global Mapper from the MsTools ribbon

  •  Select "Download Online Data"
  • you will be able to select from a variety of free webmap services, or you can define a new source for yourself.

Once you select a source, follow these tips:

  • Select the source, and select the option to access "Entire Data Source Bounds"
  • Pick on "Connect"
  • When prompted "Current Screen Bounds?" select "No"
  • configure your preferred background color and Close

Notes for while viewing:

  • With large datasets, zooming and panning can cause long delays in regenerating the view. Resolve this by entering the command _GM_AUTOREGEN and disable the option.
  • When Autoregen is disabled, you can manually trigger a regen at any time by entering the command _GM_REGEN.  This causes the reloading of background imagery of the best possible quality.

Notes for printing from a Layout:

  • If you are exporting to a PDF, the imagery may not be visible until you set the viewport properties to Realistic
