**Update: FieldGenius 2012 now allows users to define and save Custom Coordinate Systems in FieldGenius, this procedure is no longer necessary.

Custom Coordinate Systems can be created in MicroSurvey CAD (2008 or newer) for use in FieldGenius (2008 v4.1.0 or newer).

Copy the Custom Coordinate System from FieldGenius to MicroSurvey CAD

  • connect your data collector via ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center
  • **Important, don't miss this step:** copy the file called "Coordsys" from your data collector:
    •
      • ...\MicroSurvey FieldGenius\Programs\Mapping\
    • onto your computer's harddrive (rename the existing "Coordsys" file first to back it up, instead of overwriting it)
      • Windows XP:
        • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MicroSurvey\MSCAD\2009\mscad\mapping\Data\
        • *Note: The Application Data folder is hidden by default.
      • Windows Vista:
        • C:\ProgramData\MicroSurvey\MSCAD\2009\mscad\mapping\Data\
        • *Note: The ProgramData folder is hidden by default.

Create the Custom Coordinate System in MicroSurvey CAD

  1. launch MicroSurvey CAD
  2. create a new drawing, or open up an existing drawing.
  3. go to MsPoints | Geodetic | GeoConverter Datum Editor
  4. click the "Coordinate System Editor" button
  5. click the "New" button
  6. enter the New Key Name as desired, starting with a colon, for example ":My Coordinate System"
  7. fill out all of the fields as desired with the specific details for your coordinate system.
    • Identification Tab
      • group: select the appropriate group - note, the Group names displayed can vary between MicroSurvey CAD and FieldGenius.
      • description, Source, Country/State, Locations: these can be anything
    • General/Origins/Extents/Parameters Tabs
      • enter all of the appropriate values to define your custom system
      • the available tabs and options will vary depending on various options you select.
  8. click the "Save" button
  9. click the "Close" button
  10. click the "Cancel" button
  11. exit from MicroSurvey CAD.

Copy the Custom Coordinate System and Update datum and Ellipsoid Files from MicroSurvey CAD to FieldGenius

  1. connect your data collector via ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center
  2. copy the 3 files called "Coordsys, Elipsoid and Datums" from your computer:
    •
      • Windows XP:
        • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MicroSurvey\MSCAD\2009\mscad\mapping\Data\
        • *Note: The Application Data folder is hidden by default.
      • Windows Vista:
        • C:\ProgramData\MicroSurvey\MSCAD\2009\mscad\mapping\Data\
        • *Note: The ProgramData folder is hidden by default.
    • onto your data collector, overwriting the existing files
      • ...\MicroSurvey FieldGenius\Programs\Mapping\

Select the Custom Coordinate System in FieldGenius

  1. launch FieldGenius and create a new project, and select Yes when prompted "Would you like to define a coordinate system now?"
  2. in the Coordinate System Settings screen, select the following:
    • Horizontal Group = Other US Systems
    • Horizontal System = :My Coordinate System
  3. press the "Save As Default Settings" button if desired, and follow all of the usual prompts.

Test the Custom Coordinate System in FieldGenius

  1. In FieldGenius, go into Menu Home | Calculations | Coordinate Calculator.
  2. Test transforming several published coordinates to confirm that your parameters are correct.
  3. If the test calculations are not correct, go back to MicroSurvey CAD and review your custom parameters for any errors.
  4. If the test calculations are correct, continue testing with more published coordinates just to make sure.
